Introduction
Golden Secondary School is located in the East Kootenays of British Columbia, at the north end of the Columbia Wetlands. The community of Golden is on the TransCanada Highway, 1.5 hours driving time west of Banff and 2.5 hours from Calgary, Alberta. It is a very safe, small community with excellent recreation facilities. It is close enough to larger centers that locals make frequent trips for various city activities. Golden borders on 6 National Parks and is surrounded by the Rockies and Purcell mountain ranges. Golden has an award winning golf course and is home to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, which is one of the most exciting ski destinations in the entire country.
Golden is a four season recreational community. Clean air, fresh water and beautiful views of the Rocky Mountains are normal fare. For recreation you can ski, snowboard, play hockey, ice skate, mountain bike, hike, canoe, river raft, swim, golf, play tennis, soccer, horseback ride, enjoy hot springs, rock and ice climb and more.
Our school has an experienced and dedicated staff. Students have access to the full range of provincial curriculum, including French Immersion courses, and locally developed curriculum that is engaging and relevant. Support teams monitor student programs and facilitate transition to colleges, universities, or the workforce when students complete the secondary school program. Our students have the opportunity to study academic subjects including some Advance Placement courses. In addition, we offer learning opportunities in Outdoor Education, Photography, Digital Media, Metalwork, Personal Fitness, Music (Choral and Concert Band), Woodwork, Home Economics, and Automotive.
Students can participate in team sports, rock climbing, cross country and downhill skiing, mountain biking, golfing, music, drama, and art activities. There is something for everyone. In the coming school year, 2021-2022, we will be offering an Outdoor Education Academy, where students will be immersed in outdoor field experiences. These students will complete four ministry approved courses through this program.
A beautiful school building houses networked classrooms and science labs, a gathering area called the Forum, as well as a library that reflects 21st century learning. We have running and walking trails surrounding our school, as well as a courtyard with picnic tables for outside studying, eating, and socializing.
Golden Secondary School welcomes many international students each year. Their addition to our school community and, more broadly to Golden, provides opportunities for life long cross cultural friendships to grow.
